Conference «The princely landmarks of Verrneuil-en-Halatte»

The Halatte forest offers walkers a large number of ancient boundary markers. The oldest date back to the early 16th century and bear the coats of arms of their owners. The commune of Verneuil has a collection of 57 boundary stones. These are certainly less prestigious than the emblazoned markers, but they nonetheless constitute a homogeneous group dating from the late 18th century. A meticulous search for these markers in the field, their geolocation and the study of archives, in particular old maps and plans, have enabled us to discover their origin and understand their usefulness. The lecture will present the owner of the land marked out, namely His Serene Highness the 8th Prince de Condé, a brief history of the Halatte forest, the land belonging to the Prince in the Verneuil area and the location of the markers he left us and their function. A lecture offered by the Friends of Vieux Verneuil, on Tuesday 31 March 2026 at 8.30pm (Grande salle Manoir Salomon de Brosse) given by Michel Huyvaert, Roger Puff and Christian Tauziède
